It had been 1 yr and 2 weeks since we had visited McCullough peaks Bureau of Land Management dessert in 2020. We were so ready to return to see our horses, but this time we decided to make it even more of an adventure: we would get a tent and camp right on the BLM land.
We left Tennessee on Friday morning, June 11th and drove about ½ way to Nebraska, 12 hours. We finished the trip on Saturday (another 12ish hours), arriving in Cody around dinner time.
Since we weren’t entirely sure where we’d camp out on the desert lands and it was getting late, we set up our tent in a campground in Cody. We had a few hours of daylight left, and we headed out to see if the horses would be basking in the evening sun.
We parked around the area we had seen them last year, and we hiked up the hill to see what we could see. It was almost 9 pm, and the sun was still blazing!
Immediately we spotted a group of three, but they were pretty far away, maybe a few miles. So we got back in the car and tried to find some drivable paths to get to them. Thank goodness we did, because there they were!
By the time we parked and got to them, the sun was starting to set, but we were so close and I had to try to get this shot. The lighting and atmosphere gave some crazy color!
The three galloped toward us, played, whinnied, kicked up dirt – it was amazing. But what I’m about to say now was the true miracle: As I looked through my lens at 8:50 pm on June 12th, one of the horses broke away from the others, briefly alone. I watched. I shot. And then I saw it – his ears. It was the Warrior.
It was like he had been waiting for us all year. We had seen his face on our wall all year. I had talked about him so often all year that I felt like he was my own. His appearance in 2020 had changed me.
And there he was. As he did in 2020 he stood there. And just like in 2020, it’s as if he was saying, “Yep. Still here and so are you.”
