Let me share a snapshot of a day that turned into an incredible photo opportunity in the Sand Wash Basin. We had been on the lookout for wild horses all day, without a stroke of luck. Time was ticking, the evening was creeping in, and the desert chill was becoming more apparent. Setting up camp was on our to-do list, but we hadn't gotten around to it just yet. I have a soft spot for visiting during the spring when foals are just starting to explore their legs, and the desert is sprinkled with green. However, on this day, we took a chance on a side road that promised adventure. It led us to a plateau, and to our pleasant surprise, we found a group of seven horses peacefully grazing. As we were there taking photos, we witnessed a beautiful moment: more horses were making their way up the hill, returning from a watering hole below. Among them was a foal, and the light of the setting sun cast a perfect scene that every photographer dreams of. The icing on the cake was a regal stallion who seemed to take a moment to ensure the safety of his herd. He stood there, noble and watchful, and it felt as though he was posing just for me. I captured the moment, and the resulting shot was more than just visually striking—it was a memory made tangible. This photo, featuring the stallion's protective pause, stands out in my collection.
