Our venture to the west earlier this year, in pursuit of the majestic horses of Sand Wash Basin, was quite the adventure. We were greeted by nature's unpredictable moods - mud-soaked trails and overflowing creeks that made navigation impossible. Safety first, we conceded the battle to nature, and moved on to McCullough peaks.
Alas, the situation was no different there. We heard tales of a stranded vehicle caught in the mud, the passengers awaiting rescue. We found refuge in Cody, hoping the sun would dry the paths, but after four long days, our hopes were dashed.
On the rare occasions we could see the horses, I captured their grace and power. In one such picture, against a sky that was cloudy and foreboding , When editing this shot back at home I couldn't help but darken and embellish the sky mirroring my frustration. My friend Chaco graced this frame, a sight that brought a smile to my face. It seems our paths always cross when we visit; often, he's in the company of our other friend Hickory.
As we prepare to embark on another journey in 10 days, the anticipation is tinged with concern. The upcoming Bait gather might be our last chance to see some of our old friends. The uncertainty of it all is a heavy weight.
Reflecting back, I remember the moment in 2022 when I captured my last image of Washaki not knowing he would pass just a few months later wild and free. Those pictures hold a sacred place in my heart, precious tokens of time spent in their magnificent presence.
Preserving these moments, these interactions, these friendships, is my humble tribute to their untamed spirits. 🌄
